In ancient Greece girls married at the age of 13 or 14. They usually married men twice their age. In Athens life was very dull for girls. They were only allowed to play the flute and dance. Girls were not allowed to go to school either. Life for boys was much better, they did the shopping because they were educated and saw the world. Free men were citizens of their polis, because they went to school and learned philoshophy. Athens was also obsessed with sports.100,000 people lived in Athens. In Sparta life was alot different for girls. Girls in Sparta trained very, very hard but unlike the boys in Sparta ,who trained to be soliders starting at the age of 7, girls trained to be strong mothers to strong children. Sparta also had much more slaves then any other city-state in Greece. Sparta was obsessed with their millitary and wanted to become the strongest Greek city-state. Philoshophy was big in Ancient Greece. Phlilosophers studied history and asked questions about life like, how and why does it rain, and where did humans come from. Socrates was one of the most famous philosophers. But when he began to question the greek way of life and their religion, laws and customs he went to court. Socrates was found guilty of "poisoning" the minds of the young men of Greece and was sentenced to death. Since he was unable to record his thoughts Socrates' student Plato did that for him, Plato was the next great philosopher. Another great philoshopher was Aristotle, he tutored Alexander the Great. How did the Greeks write all of these things down? With the Greek alphabet of course! The letters in the Greek alphabet stood for sounds and not for objects or things. This made it alot easier to write and read. the first letter of the greek alphabet is Alpha then Beta then Gamma. The last letter of the greek alphabet Omega.
